Privacy Policy
iCath collects nothing. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking of any kind. Everything you type stays on your device and is discarded when you leave the calculator. The only things stored are which calculators you starred, which tab you chose to open to, whether you prefer metric or US units, and the fact that you accepted the Terms.
1. Who this policy is from
This Privacy Policy describes how the iCath mobile application (the "App") handles information. The App is published by Weston Hickey, MD, FACC, FSCAI, of Houston, Texas, United States (the "Developer"). To the extent any data-protection law would treat anyone as a "controller" or "business" with respect to the App, that person is the Developer, who can be reached at privacy@icathapp.com. This policy applies to the App only, and not to any third-party website or service the App links to.
This policy should be read together with the App's Terms of Use & Medical Disclaimer, which govern your use of the App.
2. The short version
The App does not collect, transmit, sell, share, or monetize any personal information. It has no user accounts, no sign-in, no analytics or telemetry, no advertising, no third-party software development kits, and no tracking technologies. The Developer does not receive, and has no way to receive, any information about how you personally use the App.
3. What the App stores on your device
The App stores four small preferences locally on your device, using the operating system's standard preference storage. None of them is transmitted anywhere, and none of them describes a patient:
(a) Favorites — the identifiers of the calculators you have starred, so they appear in a pinned section. This records which calculators you marked, never any value you entered into them.
(b) Terms acceptance — the version number of the Terms of Use you accepted and the date and time you accepted it, so you are not asked again until the Terms materially change.
(c) Default tab — which of the App's tabs you chose to open to, stored as a tab number.
(d) Units — whether you chose to enter height and weight in metric or US units, stored as a single number. It changes only how values are typed and labeled; every calculation runs in metric regardless.
These preferences remain on your device, are included in your device backups if you have backups enabled, and are permanently deleted when you delete the App.
4. What the App does not collect
For the avoidance of doubt, the App does not collect, request, or access: your name, email address, telephone number, or postal address; any account credentials; your location; your contacts, photos, camera, microphone, calendar, or health data; any advertising identifier or device fingerprint; your IP address; usage analytics, event logs, session recordings, or heat maps; or any information from other apps or websites.
The App contains no advertising and no third-party analytics, attribution, or crash-reporting software. Because the App does not track you across apps or websites owned by other companies, it does not present, and has no reason to present, the system's App Tracking Transparency prompt.
One deliberate exception, which is entirely under your control: the Reference tab offers a link to email support@icathapp.com. Choosing it opens your own mail application with a blank message. The App does not compose, pre-fill, send, or read anything, and nothing is transmitted unless you write and send it yourself. If you do, the Developer receives your email address and whatever you chose to include, and will use it only to answer you. Please do not include any patient information in such a message.
5. Patient information
The App is designed so that it cannot become a repository of patient information. Every calculator is stateless: it opens blank, computes within the session, and retains nothing when you leave it. Values you enter are held in memory only, are never written to storage, and are never transmitted to the Developer or to anyone else.
Because the App neither receives nor maintains protected health information on behalf of a covered entity or business associate, it is not intended to function as a covered entity or business associate under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ("HIPAA"), and no business associate agreement is required or offered.
You remain solely responsible for complying with HIPAA and every other privacy obligation applicable to your practice. In particular, the "Copy summary" function places text on your device's clipboard at your direction; where that text goes afterwards is under your control and outside the App.
6. The App Store and Apple
The App is distributed free of charge through the Apple App Store. There are no subscriptions, in-app purchases, or fees of any kind, so no payment information exists in connection with the App: the App never sees, requests, or handles payment card details, Apple Account credentials, or billing information, and the Developer never receives them. The App makes no purchases through Apple's StoreKit framework and performs no entitlement checks.
Your download of the App is processed by Apple under your Apple Account, acting as an independent company under its own privacy policy — not this one. Apple provides the Developer with aggregated and anonymized download statistics that do not identify individual users; the Developer receives nothing else from Apple about you.
7. Diagnostics you may choose to send to Apple
If you have enabled Apple's "Share With App Developers" analytics setting on your device, Apple may make crash reports and performance diagnostics for the App available to the Developer. This is a setting you control in the operating system, and it can be turned off at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.
Reports delivered this way are aggregated and de-identified by Apple before the Developer sees them. They describe the state of the software when a problem occurred; they do not contain values you entered into a calculator, and they do not identify you.
8. Links to other websites
The App links to third-party resources such as journal articles, professional society documents, and official calculators. Opening one leaves the App and hands you to your web browser. Once you are there, that site's own privacy policy applies, and its operator may collect information about your visit — including your IP address — over which the Developer has no control and no visibility. The Developer does not share any information with these sites, and receives nothing back from them.
9. Children
The App is a professional reference tool intended for licensed healthcare professionals, as described in the Terms of Use. It is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or any higher minimum age in your jurisdiction), is not designed to appeal to children, and does not knowingly collect information from anyone — including any child. Because the App collects no information at all, it collects none from children. If you believe a child has somehow provided personal information in connection with the App, contact privacy@icathapp.com.
10. Your privacy rights
Privacy laws — including the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR"), the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act ("CCPA"), and similar laws of other U.S. states and other countries — give you rights over personal information an organization holds about you, including rights to access, correct, delete, and port it, and to object to or restrict its processing.
The Developer holds no personal information about you, so there is nothing to access, correct, delete, port, restrict, or object to. Because no personal information is collected, none is sold, shared, or disclosed, none is transferred internationally, and none is retained by the Developer for any period. The App makes no automated decisions about you and does not profile you. The preferences described in Section 3 are held on your own device, under your own control, and are removed completely by deleting the App.
California residents: in the preceding twelve (12) months the Developer has collected no categories of personal information, has not sold or shared personal information, and has not collected, used, or disclosed sensitive personal information. The Developer will never discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right, and you may submit a request directly or through an authorized agent to privacy@icathapp.com.
EEA and UK residents: because the App is designed not to process personal data, the Developer does not rely on any legal basis for processing and has not been required to appoint a data protection officer or an EU or UK representative. If you believe the App has handled information about you in a way this policy does not describe, contact privacy@icathapp.com; you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
You may send any privacy request or question to privacy@icathapp.com. Every request will be reviewed and answered.
11. Security
The principal security measure is architectural: information that is never collected cannot be breached, leaked, or subpoenaed from the Developer. The App maintains no server, no database, and no account system. The preferences described in Section 3 are protected by your device's own security — its passcode, biometric lock, and storage encryption — which the Developer recommends you keep enabled, particularly on a device used clinically.
12. Changes to this policy
This policy may be revised — for example, if a future version of the App gains a feature that changes how information is handled. The revised policy will be published at the same address with an updated version number and effective date, and the current text is always readable inside the App under Reference → Legal. Material changes affecting how information is handled will be described in the App's release notes.
